How long does it take to become a qualified artisan?
Artisan qualifications are achieved through the new system which is called the Occupational Certificate. This entails a 3 year process. The first year is spent in full time studies at Traincorp campus in Meyerton. During this year, the student masters the theory of the qualification or trade and also completes the practical modules of the course. This if followed by a two year work place phase during which the student is working in the industry and has a logbook to complete. At the end of the work place phase, in other words the end of year three, the student returns to Traincorp to be put through the Final External Summative Assessment (FESA). In the trades, this entails a Trade Test.
Where can I get more information on the Occupational Certificates?
QCTO website: QCTO Home of skills assurance
Who and what it QCTO?
The Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) is the division of the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) which deals with all technical and occupational training post school.

Traincorp is accredited with QCTO as a Skills Development Provider and FET College. All the training courses presented by Traincorp are accredited with QCTO.
How old must a student be to enroll as a Traincorp student?
Education law in South Africa states that children must be enrolled at a Department of Basic Education school, or private school until the end of the year in which him/her turns 15. Traincorp do not enroll students who have not reached this minimum age.
What are the minimum school grades and subjects a student must have to enroll at Traincorp?
The Occupational Certificates requires a minimum of grade10 with Mathematics Literacy and the compulsory languages. Other subjects are not specified. The Fundamental Literacy Competency (FLC) obtainable through IEB is also accepted.
The Skills Programs have no minimum school grade or subject entry requirements, but students must be able to read and write on a functional level.
Can I study part time or through evening classes or online?
The trade qualifications all have theory or knowledge modules as well as practical work sessions and tasks. These can not be done on a computer or part time basis. Students must follow the program: full time studies, then workplace experience. Trade skills cannot be taught online and the practical modules are time consuming and intense training sessions.
The ECD course is presented on a part-time basis over 18 months, and it has contact sessions which the students must attend at college. These contact sessions consists of a number of Saturday lectures and one to three day contact sessions during the school holidays, except the December school holidays.
Where do the students find jobs for the two-year apprenticeship phase?
Under the Occupational Certificate method of training, the requirements for the employers who wish to employ students have been revised. Employers no longer have to register or accredit with the SETA’s or government departments as training providers. The workplace training is done under the Traincorp FET College banner and there are only three main requirements namely:
1. The company has to be CIPC registered with a valid tax number.
2. The company employing a student, must have a trade test qualified artisan employed under who’s supervision the student will work.
3. The employer must enter into contract of collaboration with Traincorp FET College.
This means that students find work in many businesses and even micro businesses do employ the students. Traincorp does not accept responsibility for the employment of students but the college assist and refer students to employers.
